APPOINTMENT CHECKLIST
What to bring to your notary appointment.
Prepare your complete document, acceptable NJ identification, recipient instructions and required witnesses before your mobile notary appointment.

1. The complete document and instructions
Have every page and attachment ready. Complete the information you are responsible for according to the recipient’s instructions, leaving the signature for the appointment when required. Bring any supplied notarial certificate. If the form or required act is unclear, ask the recipient or an attorney before the visit.
Already signed? Say so when arranging the appointment. An acknowledgment may involve an existing signature; a signed-and-sworn jurat or signature witnessing calls for signing before the notary. Do not alter the document just to guess at a solution.
2. Identification for each participating signer
Bring a passport, driver’s license or government-issued non-driver ID that is current or expired no more than three years before the act. NJ also permits other current or similarly expired government ID containing a signature or photograph when satisfactory to the notary.
If ID is missing, damaged, unusual or shows a different name, discuss it before booking. Personal knowledge and a properly identified credible witness are other statutory methods, but they must meet the rules. The notary can request additional information. 3. Signers and any required witnesses
Every person whose statement or signature is part of the notarial act must participate as required. A signed page delivered by a relative does not replace the signer’s appearance. Tell us about each person involved.
A document witness and a credible witness used to establish identity have different roles. Check document witness requirements with the preparer or recipient and agree on arrangements beforehand. Do not assume the notary brings witnesses or that facility staff can serve.
4. A suitable place and a confirmed cost
- A confirmed day and time, with all participating signers available
- The precise address, unit, guest entrance and access instructions
- A place to set out and review the paperwork privately
- The itemized notarial fees, any other agreed charges and the total
- Payment arrangements, the $99.99 cancellation fee and the terms that determine when it applies
5. Tell us about practical difficulties early
For a hospital or care setting, confirm visitor access and coordinate the time around care. If the signer is physically unable to write, raise that beforehand so the required procedure can be assessed. A physical limitation and inability to participate knowingly and voluntarily are different issues.
The notary may need to pause or decline an act when its requirements cannot be satisfied. A scheduled appointment does not guarantee completion.
A simple first message
“I need a mobile notary in [town] for [document type], with [number] signers. Is [day/time] available? The instructions mention [witnesses or other requirements]. What is the itemized total?”
You do not need to send ID numbers, ID photographs, medical details or confidential document contents in the initial inquiry. Required identification and notarial record information can be addressed during the appointment.
